FG to host conference on basic education--Minister
Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of State for Education, said on Tuesday in Abuja that a national conference on basic education would be held soon.
Wike disclosed this while declaring open the eighth quarterly meeting of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) management and the executive chairmen of State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs).
The minister said the proposed conference would involve all critical stakeholders in the basic education sector with a view to identifying critical challenges and the best ways to resolve them within the shortest possible time.
He said the Federal Government had, however, changed the modalities for training of teachers beginning from this year.
He also said that due to actions taken by some state governments, the Federal Government had been unable to get value for the money spent on teachers’ professional development programme.
``We have noticed that the earlier model of releasing training funds to you is easily abused and has unfortunately failed to yield the much-needed value for money spent.
``Consequently, I have approved the cluster school model proposed by UBEC with effect from this year in view of its envisaged benefits,’’ the minister said.
Wike said that states that had yet to use their teacher--training funds for 2012 would not be considered for the 2013 exercise.
He said the Federal Government would also not tolerate any abuse of the free textbook distribution process.
Earlier, UBEC acting Executive Secretary, Prof. Charles Onocha, said substantial progress had  been made in the basic education sector due to the commitment of the Federal Government.
He noted that the synergy developed by the ministry, UBEC and SUBEB chairmen had yielded the desired result.
Alhaji Wada Zekeri, Dean of SUBEB chairmen, commended the minister for providing the right leadership for the resolution of the challenges facing the basic education sector.
